Ramps
Ramps
are a very common solution to barrier free entry / exit to homes and
businesses.
There are
three major types of ramps: Permanent, Modular and Portable.
Permanent
Permanent ramps are probably the most common. We see them at most commercial
properties and many private residences. The most common material utilized
in residential applications is treated lumber. Other common materials
are concrete and recently, composite materials.
Permanent
ramps are constructed with similar techniques used in constructing decks.
Construction of a ramp also usually requires procuring a building permit
from the local building officials.
Most permanent
ramps can be designed and constructed with "curb appeal" as
well as with taste and compliment surrounding decor and landscaping (see
photo).
Costs will
vary depending on materials, configuration and finish details.
Modular
Modular ramps are quite common with rental properties and in
cases where long term use is not warranted. These systems are able to
be prefabricated, then set up on site. Most modular ramp systems consist
of prefabricated runners and supports, with lumber decking & rails,
or all extruded aluminum decking and rails.
Most modular
ramps can be set up with out any structural alterations or requirement
of footers etc. However, it is suggested to consult local authorities
regarding use of this type system. There are some jurisdictions that still
require a footer and plan review.
Portable
Portable ramps are just that; portable. Portable ramps are generally for
a lower rise and not for extended use at one particular location. The
concept is usually one of being able to set it down and then remove after
each use.

Pros & Cons |
| Pros: |
Cons: |
| Ramps
are generally low to no maintenance. |
Due
to slope requirements, ( 1:12 for commercial, recommended for residential,
but most residential requirements in Ohio will allow up to 1:8 slope
) |
| Can
blend into surroundings when appropriately constructed |
Ramps
can occupy substantial square footage.
|
Can
be constructed with variety of materials
to suit taste |
For
high rises, ramp length can be quite tasking for manual wheelchair
users.
As
they are mostly exterior, need to be maintained in inclement weather
etc. |
